AstraZeneca said on Tuesday it will launch the first generic version of its heartburn medicine Nexium, in the United States, in the form of a pill.
The drugmaker said the launch of its own generic, made by Teva, was its first for the U. S. market.
Nexium has been on the market since its introduction in 2003 and is currently available in many U. pharmacies.
Nexium is AstraZeneca’s third-best-selling medicine, with sales of $1.5 billion in 2004, according to IMS Health.
“We are very pleased to launch this product,” said Michael Eisenstein, AstraZeneca’s chairman and chief executive.
Nexium is an anti-inflammatory medication that was launched in the United States in 2003 as a treatment for asthma and COPD. It is also available as a generic version.
AstraZeneca’s announcement comes after a long time in which the company’s sales of Nexium have been limited due to a patent expiry in 2002. It is still preparing to launch its own generic in the U. S., with the first generic being approved in December 2004.
The U. patent for Nexium was expiring in 2006, meaning the drug will now be available as a generic in the U. and other countries. In addition, AstraZeneca is working on a similar drug called Nexium that would be marketed under the brand name Revatio, according to IMS Health.
AstraZeneca has been marketing the drug for about a year, and the company is still developing the drug. Nexium, which is available as a capsule, is the first heartburn drug to win approval for U. sale.
In an interview with a host of health care radio shows, AstraZeneca said it was pleased to be launching its own generic Nexium. “We’re very pleased to be launching a generic version of Nexium,” said AstraZeneca chairman and chief executive Hank McKinnell.
But the company noted that Nexium was first introduced as a treatment for frequent heartburn, a common symptom among patients.
AstraZeneca said in a statement that the company will continue to market Nexium under the brand name Revatio for the U. market and will offer the generic version in other countries as well.
“This launch of the generic version is significant to AstraZeneca’s continued commitment to providing affordable, clinically-proven medicines for all Americans,” said McKinnell.
In 2004, AstraZeneca launched Nexium in the U. as a treatment for frequent heartburn, a common symptom among patients.
But the drug is still in a “diet-and-pharma” phase of development, which means it must be effective in patients who have been taking medicines for more than two years and have not been prescribed the correct drug.
“Our main focus is to provide affordable, clinically-proven medicines for patients who have not been prescribed the correct drug,” said McKinnell.
